Kids and Sleep: Is There a Genetic Connection?

Kids need good sleep habits, especially if their parents have sleep issues. Studies now show that some children might be born more likely to have sleep problems, like insomnia.

Experts have found that kids who are genetically more likely to get insomnia often have a harder time sleeping at night. This information comes from the Journal of Child Psychology and Psychiatry. It means that we can see early signs of sleep issues in kids that might show up more as they grow older.

Understanding Sleep Patterns in Children

Dr. Eus van Someren explains that while genetics play a part, it’s still important to help kids develop good sleep habits.

This study looked at over 2,000 European children. Mothers and sleep trackers gave information about how well the children slept. Interestingly, moms often thought their kids had more trouble sleeping than what the sleep trackers showed.

Dr. Amita Sehgal, a sleep expert, notes that sometimes what we think about our sleep doesn’t always match how much we actually sleep.
